the Big Buddha in Phuket Island

Phuket: Temples, Islands, and a Short Tropical Experience

Phuket is one of the first places that comes to mind when people think of Thailand. Tropical islands, beaches, and temples define the region. For me, Phuket was an experience where expectations and reality didn’t fully align but it still offered some strong and memorable moments. The temples and nearby islands were easily the highlights of the trip.

Landing Over the Ocean: First Impressions of Phuket

In the video I filmed from the airplane window, you can clearly see the islands during landing. This ocean-focused approach creates a strong first impression, and even before touching the ground, you feel that you’ve arrived somewhere tropical.

Big Buddha: The Symbol of Phuket

One of the most recognizable landmarks in Phuket is Big Buddha Phuket. Located on a hill, this massive statue stands out for both its scale and its panoramic views. It appears in almost every visual representation of Phuket and for good reason.

This spot represents the spiritual and cultural side of the island in the clearest way.

Wat Phra Thong: The Half-Buried Buddha

One of the temples I visited in Phuket was Wat Phra Thong. Known for its half-buried Buddha statue, this temple has a simple but meaningful atmosphere. The surrounding buildings, flags, and sculptures give the area a calm and peaceful feeling.

Wat Khao Rang Samakkhitham: Phuket from Above

Another stop was Wat Khao Rang Samakkhitham. From the entrance, you climb stairs leading up the hill, where you encounter statues, elephant figures, and temple structures.

The interior areas, where you enter barefoot, offered a closer look at daily religious life in Thailand.

The Islands: Phuket’s Strongest Side

The islands around Phuket are where the region truly shines. James Bond Island and Phi Phi Islands are closely associated with Phuket for a reason.

The iconic limestone formations of James Bond Island and the natural scenery of the Phi Phi Islands are genuinely impressive. Encountering a monkey on Phi Phi added an unexpected and memorable moment to the experience.

Patong Beach and a Small Daily Moment

When people think of Phuket, beaches naturally come to mind, and Patong Beach is one of the most well-known. It’s busy, lively, and unmistakably touristy. Lying on the beach with a young coconut in hand was one of the calmer moments of the day.

Departure: A Final Look at Phuket

The window-seat video I recorded during takeoff marked the end of the trip. It was a short but intense experience. While I didn’t connect with every aspect of Phuket, the temples and islands stood out as its strongest features.

Final Thoughts on Phuket

Phuket wasn’t a destination I personally fell in love with, but it still had places worth seeing. The temples and surrounding islands gave the trip meaning. For travelers seeking a tropical experience, Phuket can be the right stop for me, it was more of a brief pause before moving on to other parts of Thailand.

I spent two years living in Melbourne, a city that shaped the way I travel and experience places. It wasn’t just a destination, but everyday life studying, improving my English, building friendships, and learning the rhythm of the city. Melbourne taught me to slow down and notice daily details, from parks and rivers to neighborhoods and local culture. During this time, I also took a short trip to Sydney, experiencing its iconic harbor, Opera House, and a more energetic, crowded atmosphere.

After Australia, my journey continued to Bali, where life moved at a completely different pace. Temples, nature, local streets, and daily rituals created a calm and reflective experience. I then spent a short time in Phuket, exploring temples, islands, and coastal areas, gaining a brief but memorable impression of Thailand. Later, I traveled to Japan, visiting Kobe, Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara where tradition and modern life exist in perfect balance, and everyday details feel intentional.

This blog is a personal collection of places I lived in, short trips I took, and moments that left an impression on me focusing on local life, culture, food, nature, and the small details that often go unnoticed.
