Experiencing AFL in Melbourne: What Is Footy and Why It Matters So Much

Living in Melbourne, you quickly realize one thing: sport here isn’t just something people watch, it’s a lived culture. One of the strongest examples of this is the AFL; the Australian Football League. Locals simply call it “footy”, and in Melbourne, footy feels almost like part of the city’s identity.

What Is Footy?

Australian Football is completely different from both soccer and American football. At first glance it might look confusing, but once you start watching, the logic becomes clear very quickly.

  • The game is played on a large oval field
  • Each team has 18 players on the field
  • The match flows almost continuously with very few stops
  • To score, players kick the ball between goal posts, not into a net

There is no offside rule, which makes the game very open and fast-paced. Unlike American football, the play doesn’t stop after every action. The constant movement is what makes footy so intense and exciting to watch.

Match Day Atmosphere

The match I attended was at Marvel Stadium, located in Docklands. With a capacity of around 50,000 people, the stadium was completely full on match day.

What stood out immediately was the crowd itself. There were families, couples, kids, and lifelong fans all sitting together. Footy isn’t seen as a rough sport only for hardcore fans it’s a family-friendly event that people of all ages genuinely enjoy.

Inside the Game

As soon as the match started, the energy inside the stadium changed completely. The crowd reacted to every goal, every hard contest, and every spectacular mark. The athleticism of the players, their jumps, speed, and physical strength, was genuinely impressive.

Why Footy Is So Important in Melbourne

In Melbourne, footy shapes weekend plans. People organize meetups around match times, talk about games at work and school, and grow up supporting a team from a young age. Loyalty to a club runs deep and often lasts a lifetime.

After experiencing an AFL match live, it becomes clear why Melbourne is often described as the sporting capital of Australia. AFL isn’t just a league, it’s a key part of the city’s culture and social life.

Is Watching a Footy Match Worth It?

Absolutely. Even if you’re not a sports fan, attending an AFL match at least once while in Melbourne is highly recommended. The atmosphere, the pace of the game, and the way people connect through sport make it a truly memorable experience.

Footy is one of the best ways to understand Melbourne beyond its streets and landmarks.

I spent two years living in Melbourne, a city that shaped the way I travel and experience places. It wasn’t just a destination, but everyday life studying, improving my English, building friendships, and learning the rhythm of the city. Melbourne taught me to slow down and notice daily details, from parks and rivers to neighborhoods and local culture. During this time, I also took a short trip to Sydney, experiencing its iconic harbor, Opera House, and a more energetic, crowded atmosphere.

After Australia, my journey continued to Bali, where life moved at a completely different pace. Temples, nature, local streets, and daily rituals created a calm and reflective experience. I then spent a short time in Phuket, exploring temples, islands, and coastal areas, gaining a brief but memorable impression of Thailand. Later, I traveled to Japan, visiting Kobe, Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara where tradition and modern life exist in perfect balance, and everyday details feel intentional.

This blog is a personal collection of places I lived in, short trips I took, and moments that left an impression on me focusing on local life, culture, food, nature, and the small details that often go unnoticed.
