Kobe is often associated with food, shopping, and city life, but just a short ride away there’s a completely different side of the city. One day, I took the ropeway up to Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens and combined it with a visit to Nunobiki Waterfall. It turned out to be one of the calmest and most refreshing experiences I had in Kobe.
This is the kind of place you go to slow down, walk without a plan, and enjoy views rather than rush from one spot to another.
Taking the Ropeway Up
The experience starts with the ropeway. As the cabin goes higher, the city slowly disappears and greenery takes over. It’s a short ride, but the change in atmosphere is immediate. The higher you go, the quieter everything feels.
The ropeway itself is smooth and relaxed, and it’s worth looking back toward the city while going up. Seeing Kobe from above gives you a completely different perspective compared to walking around street level.

Walking Through Kobe Herb Garden
At the top, Kobe Herb Garden feels open and spacious. It’s not just about herbs there are flowers, walking paths, viewpoints, and small areas designed simply to sit and enjoy the surroundings. Everything is well maintained but not overly artificial.
One of the details I liked most was how peaceful the garden felt. Even though it’s a popular attraction, it never felt crowded or noisy. You can easily spend time just walking around without feeling rushed.
Inside the garden, there were small decorative setups that caught my attention, including a bathtub filled with flowers. It sounds simple, but details like that make the place feel thoughtfully designed and visually interesting.

Nunobiki Waterfall: A Natural Break
After spending time in the garden, I walked toward Nunobiki Waterfall. The path itself is part of the experience surrounded by trees, with the sound of water getting louder as you get closer.
The waterfall isn’t massive, but it feels powerful and calming at the same time. Standing nearby, you can feel the cool air and hear nothing but water and nature. It’s a refreshing contrast to the city just below.
This spot feels especially nice if you’ve been spending days in busy areas. It’s quiet, shaded, and perfect for a short break before heading back down.

Final Thoughts
Combining Kobe Herb Garden with Nunobiki Waterfall is an easy and rewarding half-day plan. The ropeway ride, the calm garden atmosphere, and the sound of the waterfall all come together nicely.
If you want a break from food-focused plans or city walking, this side of Kobe offers a slower pace and a more peaceful experience without needing to leave the city at all.
